Dear Families,

After the first full week of school, a number of family meetings and some wonderful student events- it is official- your children are living up to our expectations and in many cases, surpassing them! As I write this I have 5 sixth grade boys who are eating lunch and helping two of the boys work through a problem. Mr. Romero and I are listening in, impressed by their problem solving, empathy, humor and appetites!

This scene reflects so much of the life of our school. Our students do a tremendous amount of social negotiations each day- and often this goes unseen. They are more adept than we sometimes realize at caring for each other, watching out for one another, resolving conflict, and making sense of the social system of elementary and middle school children.

HOWEVER- it is so important that we listen closely- that all of you LISTEN closely to their stories of school, friendships, and events. We all know there is truth, even if exaggerated. We all know there is a message, even if hidden. We can learn from our children and equally, they can learn from us. They watch our reactions, responses, and behaviors. All of the adults in their lives are models of how to be fair, honest, and empathetic.

Thank you for taking seriously this huge job of supporting our children as they grow into responsible adults!

·         You should have all received a letter titled NYC Schools Account. This letter has information that enables you to access the data about your child. If you have questions, please see Rebecca Johnson (Parent Coordinator) or Sonia- in the Main Office!

·         6th-8th grade Families- please consider signing up for REMIND.COM. This will enable you to receive emails and text message reminders about assignments that your child is expected to complete!

With Respect,

Jacqui Getz
