I am so excited to tell you about two wonderful events that honored our school! We have had quite a year. The Blackboard Awards in November, a very successful Quality Review, our visitors from Norway, and most recently…
On Wednesday, May 6, DONORS CHOOSE held their annual dinner in our school. Donors Choose is a non-profit organization that supports teachers by funding their projects. A teacher describes his/her project, justifies the educational integrity of the project, explains the resources needed, and then waits for funders to go on the site and to contribute money. A Project can be anything from books to art supplies to technology to trips. Our school, PS126/MAT has so many teachers who post projects and who successfully fund their projects, that we are one of their leading schools in New York. Donors Choose invited over 130 people (from Disney, Lake Shore Furniture, Gates, Verizon, Google, Staples….) for a two day conference to discuss how to partner with schools, and our school had the honor of hosting the dinner. The guests loved meeting our staff (represented by 20 teachers) and they walked away learning about our school and the best of public education.
On Wednesday, May 13, our school was again honored at a luncheon given by ARTWORKS. This non-profit organization sends volunteers into 3rd grade classrooms for a month and teaches students about painting, architecture, decorative arts and sculpture. The 4 visits culminate in a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They were so impressed by the students and teaching that they made their informational movie on site here at 126! The film was shown at a luncheon of 200 guests to honor their volunteers and to recruit more volunteers. It is a beautiful film!
Phew! We are so lucky to be supported by these groups and it is wonderful to see our students and staff CELEBRATED!
