I have wonderful news- our school is receiving a BLACKBOARD AWARD! This award honors schools, teachers and principals from public, private and charter schools in New York City. MAT won this in 2007 BUT this year it is for our entire school, PreK-8!
I was asked to write why I love being principal of our remarkable school- here is part of what I wrote:
If I start with the staff, I must explain how hard they work, how much they respect and love children, how collaborative and intelligent they are as they design curriculum. I must brag about the time they give on their own at lunch and afterschool to support struggling learners. I must brag about how they listen to the stories of our children and create a safe and caring environment- how we are a family. I must brag about how they use Donor’s Choose to bring hundreds of books, and supplies, and sophisticated technology into classrooms. I must step back and describe their absolute stunning professionalism and how they inspire and teach me every day.
If I start with the children, I must explain how resilient and determined they are to learn and to achieve. I must describe the sound of their voices in the classrooms- talking, questioning, laughing, explaining, wondering… I must brag about how they blend together in a diverse and beautiful community. I must show their gorgeous art work, ask that you listen to the music they make and watch as they show their athletic and sportsman like abilities. I must share with you the feeling of energy and joy they give our building.
If I start with families, I must explain how they come together in easy and hard times to support our school and children and staff. How the diversity of our community pushes us to be better, think harder and come up with solutions rather than linger on problems. I must explain how they work with us and how we are all learning to be patient as we take care of our children.
Our school, and all of you, deserve this honor. CONGRATULATIONS! By the way- my husband, David, is receiving one of the Principal Awards!
